Reuters is reporting that a lobbying firm for major banks is proposing opposition research into Occupy Wall Street in order to undermine it.

Clark Lytle Geduldig & Cranford, a Washington-based firm, proposed the idea in a memo to the American Banking Association, an industry group which said on Saturday that it did not act on the idea.
The four-page memo outlined how the firm could analyze the source of protesters’ money, as well as their rhetoric and the backgrounds of protest leaders.
“If we can show they have the same cynical motivation as a political opponent, it will undermine their credibility in a profound way,” said the memo, according to a copy of it on the website of TV news channel MSNBC, which first reported on it.

I do wonder what they’ll find out about a group of people who are honest, sincere, and motivated by political interests that they have already spoken of. What this really signifies is the Establishment is attempting to keep political parties in line. They don’t want any of the politicians they gave PAC money to to show any kind of support to Occupy Wall Street. The cold message of the banks is: remember who you work for!
So it seems that the strategy of the opposition is more of the same: more buying of elections and getting political figures to stand for them. I suppose then that they’ll be buying opposition research again since upon learning of this, more people will be motivated.
I have a little ‘opposition research’ for them. I’ll take that $850,000 and put it to good use, too! Here is my proposal:
Research Question: What motivates the Occupy Wall Street Movement?
Methodology: Look at their signs and read their literature. Find out the participants’ backgrounds through survey research.
Hypothesis: The Occupy Wall Street Movement is motivated by the excessive greed and corruption of our political system on the part of the 1%.
Findings: [Insert technical jargon here]…It turns out the opposition is motivated by your assholery and douchebaggery.
Recommendations: Give them their money back, end foreclosures, stop buying politicians, stop sending hired goons to beat them up, or pack up your shit and go home. The problem is you, you fuckers.
Seriously, do these people not get it? In the article they speak of cynical practices as though it doesn’t apply to them.
